Preserving Character While Preparing for a Fresh Finish
We recently completed a wallpaper removal and interior repaint project in a late-1800s farmhouse in Dundas, Ontario. Homes of this age often come with layers of history — and in this case, multiple generations of wallpaper — which require careful preparation before any painting can begin.
This project highlights why experience and proper prep work matter, especially in older homes.
The Challenge: Multiple Layers of Wallpaper in a Historic Stairway
The main stairway and upper hallway walls were fully wallpapered, with some areas showing two to three layers of older paper that had been applied over the years. In homes from the 1800s, wallpaper was often installed directly over plaster walls, making removal more delicate than in modern drywall construction.
Removing wallpaper improperly in these homes can easily damage the plaster beneath.

The original wallpaper showed signs of age, wear, and separation at seams. In several areas, we uncovered additional layers of wallpaper beneath, confirming that careful removal would be critical to protect the underlying walls.
The Preparation Process (Where the Real Work Happens)
This project was all about preparation.
